Golden Bay remains one of the last areas of accessable remoteness in New Zealand, tucked into the northwestern corner of the South Island and sandwiched between our largest (Kahurangi) and smallest (Abel Tasman) National Parks. Golden Bay also boasts Farewell Spit and Te Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs, the largest spring system in New Zealand and among the largest in the world.
Farewell Spit, a wetland of international importance, supports more than 90 species of bird, many of which are migrating waders from the arctic regions of Alaska and the northern coast of Siberia. The Godwit, Knot, Turnstones, Whimbrel,Curlew, Oystercatchers and Tern among others arriving here August/September each year to feed on the extensive sand flats only to return to their homelands six months later to breed.
Mineral deposits in Golden Bay formed the backbone of the region for many years. Now only decaying relics of this bygone era remain. Deposits of coal, iron ore, graphite, asbestos and gold gave way to dairy farming, fishing and tourism the mainstays of today. Collingwood, once the hub of this thriving industrial area, was destined to become the capital of New Zealand until more lucrative gold deposits were discovered elsewhere and the population declined rapidly.
While in Golden Bay enjoy a guided tour of Farewell Spit or wander the breathtaking coastline through Puponga Farm Park. This three hour (one way) walk takes you along the coastal cliffs, past a WW2 radar station site and Cape Farewell, the northern most tip of the South Island, ending at the stunning Wharariki Beach with towering archway islands just offshore.
Walk some of the many tracks in the area, varying from an easy 1hr to the more demanding 3-4 day Heaphy Track where visiters will encounter many native birds including Kiwi and the very inquisitive Kea and Kaka, both large green parrots.
Relax and enjoy a coffee and some excellent cuisine at the Bays highly acclaimed cafes' and resturants. A must for visitors are the Mussel Inn at Onekaka and the Naked Possum, a cafe and eco tannery in the Kaituna Valley about 15kms west of Collingwood.
